Green public procurement

What green public procurement (GPP) is, when it applies and what it means for suppliers.

Updated 3. July 2026

Green public procurement (GPP) is an approach where the buyer considers a product's or service's environmental impact — not only its price.

What it means

The rules include environmental requirements or criteria, for example energy efficiency, material origin, reusability or lower emissions across the product's life cycle.

When it applies

For some groups of goods and services GPP is mandatory, for others recommended. The scope is being expanded step by step.

What it means for suppliers

For companies that can prove they meet environmental requirements (certificates, technical data) it is a competitive advantage. Prepare the relevant documents early.

GPP requirements rest on the Public Procurement Law and regulations issued under it.
